Chakras: Diagnosis

Now we switch to a different application for the chakra system, that of diagnosis.

I spent a goodly number of years consulting for a large group of doctors at a healthcare concern in Boston using the chakra system to guide patients and their physicians to greater healing.

So let’s talk about diagnosis for a minute.

Diagnosis is a gift, on the one hand, and a curse, on the other. Let me tell you why I think so.

When anyone has a collection of uncomfortable symptoms, having a name for them — a diagnosis — can feel, at least temporarily, like a relief. Oh, it’s just my fill-in-the-blank acting up. That’s the gift, a certain reverse peace of mind, if you will. The logic goes like this: at least if I know what this is, I also know what it isn’t. So far, so good.

On the other hand, said the Libra, did you notice the little word in between Oh, … and … up? A little word that’s actually a total, freaky game-changer? So you aren’t in suspense, it’s “my.”

You see that “my,” whilst comforting is also limiting.

The etymology of the word diagnosis is dia- = apart + gnosis = knowledge. Hence, to know apart. This is the knowledge of something that is apart from oneself. This state of dis-ease. (hyphen intentional)

But that little word “my” pops up again, and that changes everything. With that one notion, we own our disease. Do you really wish to own your … arthritis, heart disease, diabetes, sciatica, rash, hives … or whatever other symptoms might be yours? Probably not.

The reason is simple. It’s because most of us would rather not have a diagnosis turn into a prognosis. In fact, that’s a common New Age saying, “A diagnosis is not a prognosis.” Etymologically, prognosis means pro- = before + gnosis = knowledge. Hence, prognosis means to know before.

And humans LOVE LOVE LOVE to know before, don’t we?

It means to us that we’re in control. When we’re not. Not now, not ever. And certainly not over states of dis-ease.

Or are we????

Tomorrow, I’ll begin with the major issues and challenges — body, heart, mind, and spirit — that inhere in each chakra.
